Annual Leadership Symposium Call for Proposals

NCCHC is the premier organization for Hispanic leadership development in community colleges. Our mission is to increase the number of successful Hispanic leaders in America’s community colleges through leadership development.

Access to learning opportunities for all has been a cornerstone of the community college mission since the colleges were created more than a century ago. For Hispanic students, access to higher education creates the opportunity to participate fully in the American dream. Access to professional development opportunities, like the NCCHC Fellows Program and Leadership Symposium, are bridges to administrative leadership positions. The Board of Directors of the National Community College Hispanic Council asks that you share your knowledge and expertise with your colleagues by submitting a proposal for a presentation at the 2008 Leadership Symposium.

Felix Aquino, NCCHC Board Member and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Oklahoma City Community College, one of our 24 breakout session presenters

Using attendee feedback from past Symposiums and current hot topics concerning community colleges and how we impact our students and communities, the conference planning committee has identified the following topics for presentations:
• Leadership (including fundraising)
• Governance and Communications (internal and external communications and Board relations)
• Best Practices and Finding Solutions (student learning outcomes, administrative services and facilities management)
• Marketing and Public Relations (for recruitment and community image)
• Student Services and The Learning College
• Personal Growth (mentoring and leadership development programs)
• Connecting the College with the Community

It’s easy to submit a session proposal!

Complete the downloadable (.pdf) form with the information on your session and mail it to us by the deadline or go to www.ncchc.com to complete and submit an online form. It’s as simple as that. The symposium has always provided attendees with practical breakout sessions. Please include the method of delivery that is most appropriate for your topic and your anticipated audio/visual needs on the form. Each breakout session will be 1 hour, 15 minutes in length and should allow time for questions and answers at the conclusion. We anticipate 20 to 50 attendees per session. Those presenters chosen will be asked to bring enough handouts for session attendees. Submission of a proposal for a presentation will serve as authorization for NCCHC to post any session content on the NCCHC website for future reference by members. Presenters are expected to register for the conference at the presenter rate.

Deadline to submit proposal: June 3, 2008

The 2008 Symposium will follow the same, streamlined format instituted in years past to maximize professional development and networking time. The Symposium will begin Sunday evening (9/28) with the traditional Welcome Reception. Monday (9/29) will feature two keynote speakers, breakout sessions and the awards banquet. On Tuesday (9/30), we will have breakout sessions in the morning, followed by a closing luncheon and keynote address. The Symposium will conclude at approximately 2:00 pm on Saturday (9/22) so you may return home to enjoy family and prepare for the week ahead; or, you may bring the family along and have time to enjoy the many wonderful activities available in Phoenix! Presenters will be invited to book hotel rooms at the special conference rate.

All potential presenters will be notified of proposal status by June 30, 2008. Those chosen will receive also presenter information/details by mail no later than July 15, 2008.

Session presenters from San Jose/Evergreen Community College District – Rosa Perez, NCCHC Board Member and Chancellor, and Bayinaah Jones, Director of Institutional Research
